Feeling Unheard? How to Speak Up in Your Mental Health Journey

carriehill2003

Hey, I’m Carrie Hill!

As a psychiatric nurse practitioner and the owner of RoadTrip 2 Recovery in Belmont, NC, I am passionate about fostering open communication in mental health care. Many individuals seek therapy or psychiatric support to find understanding and healing, yet a common theme I encounter is the feeling of being unheard by their previous providers.

The Importance of Being Heard

During my initial assessments, I often ask my patients, “What led to your decision to change providers?” While answers like “I just moved here” or “My insurance changed” are common, one response stands out and concerns me deeply: “My provider didn’t listen to me.” Even more alarming is when patients share that their provider never even looked up at them during sessions. This highlights a critical issue in mental health care—effective communication.

Advocate for Yourself

If you ever feel like your voice is not being heard in a therapeutic relationship, it’s essential to speak up. Just like any relationship, communication is vital in building trust and understanding. Here are some steps to guide you:

1️⃣ Speak Up: Don’t hesitate to share your feelings with your provider. They may not be aware of how you perceive your interactions.

2️⃣ Clarify Your Needs: Be specific about what you hope to gain from your sessions. This helps your provider tailor their approach to your unique needs.

3️⃣ Keep a Journal: Documenting your thoughts and feelings can provide valuable insights for both you and your provider. It also helps you articulate your experiences during sessions.

4️⃣ Seek a Second Opinion: If you find your needs aren’t being met, don’t hesitate to explore other options. Finding a provider who resonates with you can make all the difference.

5️⃣ Utilize Resources: Support groups, mental health apps, and online communities can offer additional guidance and a sense of connection during your journey.

Your Mental Health Matters

Remember, your mental health is a priority! 💖✨ Your journey to well-being is a collaborative effort, and you deserve to be heard and understood.

If you’ve tried these steps and still feel unheard or misunderstood, I invite you to come see me at RoadTrip 2 Recovery. I am always happy to help and provide a safe space for you to express yourself.
